In the midst of the constant moving news cycle going from Kavanaugh to President Trump to Kanye West to Elizabeth Warren to Stormy Daniels and back to President Trump, I want to spotlight a story that has gotten no coverage from the media but should be really disturbing to religious people in America, particularly Christians. So according to CBN news, christian filmmakers Carl and Angel Larson were told obey a law in the State of Minnesota that would require to represent same sex marriage in their movies or face hefty fines and jail time. I’m going show the whole story from CBN news and then give my thoughts on it.
Here is the article:
Two Christian filmmakers appeared before the 8th circuit Court of Appeals in St. Paul Tuesday to challenge Minnesota state law which they say illegally forces them to produce and create films expressing messages that contradict their core beliefs.
…
Telescope Media Group owners Carl and Angel Larsen have already been threatened with hefty fines and up to 90 days in jail if they choose to disregard the law.
90 days in jail for not representing something they don’t believe in THEIR films, ridiculous.
The couple is being represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF)
…
The Larsens want to enter the wedding industry. However, the state’s Human Rights Act stipulates if the couple creates films celebrating their Christian beliefs about marriage – that marriage is between one man and one woman, they must also create films about marriage that violate their beliefs, including films promoting same-sex marriages.
…
“The government shouldn’t threaten filmmakers with fines and jail time to force them to create films that violate their beliefs,” said ADF Senior Counsel Jeremy Tedesco in a press release. “Carl and Angel are storytellers – they script, stage, conduct interviews, capture footage, select music, edit and more – all to tell compelling stories through film that promote their religious beliefs.”
…
In 2017, the Larsens tried to challenge the law as unconstitutional but a lower court dismissed their case and mandated that they service same-sex weddings or close this part of their business. They are now appealing to the 8th Circuit Court.
…
According to the ADF, Minnesota officials have repeatedly stated that private businesses such as the Larsens’ violate the law if they decline to create films promoting same-sex weddings. Penalties for violation include payment of a civil penalty to the state; triple compensatory damages; punitive damages of up to $25,000; a criminal penalty of up to $1,000; and even up to 90 days in jail.
The fact that the State of Minnesota is allowed to get away with this is frightening in itself. It’s one thing to force a Christian baker to bake a cake for a same sex wedding, which is still bad. It’s another to force FILMMAKERS to make movies that represent something they don’t believe in. This Minnesota law is clearly unconstitutional and I’m quite astonished that the supreme Court hasn’t overruled it. This all boils down to a bigger problem on the slow rise in America for Christians and let me explain.
Yes, I realize that Christians have it relatively easy here in America. We live in the greatest and freest nation on earth, while in other countries, you are killed for sharing the teachings and love of Christ. In places like North Korea, China, the Middle East, etc, Christian pastors are forced to run underground churches in order to avoid those trying to kill them. So yeah, America is one of the safest places for Christians right now, but it may not always be like that. While the US is a terrific place, our society here has gone down hill tremendously and that’s mostly due to them rejecting God. Because of this, religious people, particularly Christians and religious Jews are mocked by the culture for so called “backwards” beliefs. For years, we have seen many cases of where government intervenes into a Christian owned business for not following a certain agenda, teachers and students are suspended from schools for expressing even a tiny amount of their faith. College professors are targeting Christian students. The church itself is screwed up. We have pastors who are changing the teachings of The Word because it’s the woke thing to do. Men aren’t engaging in it. It’s all a mess. And yes, I realize that this may be considered minor, compared to other places but I think eventually Christians will face actual persecution here in America if we continue down this road.
My main point is that, just because we have it good in America, doesn’t mean we should ignore what is happening here in front of us. Scripture tells us that we will suffer for being followers of Christ. So, it may be just mockery right now, but I see it getting worse. However, this is where we as Christians must trust in God and accept that he is in control. But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.
