Welcome to 2021. I think it is no secret that 2020 was an insane year by multiple measures. So unsurprisingly, everyone was ready for what 2021 will bring. While everyone is getting ready for their new year resolutions, things from 2020 still continued into 2021, specifically the election. This election cycle was quite different from other elections. Not just the lead up, but also election day itself. Usually, we would know the results the same night, but due to multiple circumstances, we didn’t know the results until mid December or so. Of course, one of the things that made this election crazy was the accusations of voter fraud and voting irregularities. At the beginning, it was hard not to consider this because of multiple weird circumstances that happened in multiple states. Even today, I’m sure there was some type of fraud, there is fraud in pretty much every election. The question was whether there was enough fraud to significantly turn to election to Biden’s favor. Again, I bought into this at the beginning, but as time went on, I came to the realization that there just wasn’t anything significant there. I keep hearing that there is mountains upon mountains of evidence, but then I ask why hasn’t any of it been presented? Either every single court and judge in the country is in on a conspiracy, or there simply isn’t anything significant. I know folks want Trump to have a second term, I want it too, but we have to face reality and get ready to move on from this. We cannot harp on this song for years on end, because it probably won’t turn out the way you think.

Now one thing I want to really focus on in this episode is the hope people, even professing Christians, put into politicians. There’s nothing wrong with liking certain politicians and wanting them in office over someone else. But that is completely different than putting your hope in them. Now I do expect this from those of the world. Those without a Biblical worldview and faith in God are likely to find hope in something or someone else. In recent years, it has been politicians, or more broadly, government. It is much more common for folks on the left to do this, but folks on the right are not immune to this either. Especially in this election cycle. Folks on the right and left are putting all of their hopes in Trump and Biden. This is definitely a major problem, but again, I expect this of the world. However, if you are a Christian, then that is a completely different story.

When you become a follower of Christ, all of your hope is or should be placed in Him.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

Because of His death, burial, and resurrection, we have true everlasting hope. Man cannot provide said hope. They may provide something that looks like hope, but it is only temporary. Human beings, that includes you, me, and everyone else, are inherently flawed and sinful.

For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God

So, if all of us are sinners, why would we put our hope in them over One is perfectly righteous? Unfortunately, there are professing Christians out there who seem to have put their hope in man rather than in Jesus Christ. Now of course, I don’t know any of their hearts, but from what I am observing on social media and such, it looks like that this is unfortunately the case. I get that some are disappointed in the election results or are frustrated with some of stuff surrounding it. However, some are going completely overboard. Some professing Christians are buying into the idea that when Biden is in, all hope is lost and that the country and our way of life is over. Some have said things like, “God chose Trump, so He won’t let us down, Trump will prevail and save the country.” Now, on the surface, there’s nothing wrong with that statement. This is someone putting faith in God to work things out. But when you dig down into, it’s flawed. Obviously this person is a Trump supporter and wanted him to win, but the problem is that they seem to be under the impression that God will work things out in their favor. That since they are Christian, God will only act on things that work out for them. But the harsh reality is that God doesn’t do things to make us happy. He does things to bring Himself glory. This of course springs from the “do what makes you happy culture in the church”. Where it is taught that God wants us to do what makes us happy, but this is simply not the case. As followers of Christ, we are called to do what glorifies God, not what makes us happy.

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

So yes, you might be happier to have Trump in office for a 2nd term, I certainly would, but we have to understand and acknowledge that this is probably what God intended. Nothing catches him by surprise. Maybe, He intended this scenario to happen to make followers of Christ wake up and start standing up for the Gospel and for what is right according to God. If this is the case, then we have to accept it, and not dwell on your disappointment. Both Trump and Biden are just sinners like you and me, all politicians are. So, putting your hope, as if your life depends on it, in them is a huge mistake.

Do not trust in princes, In mortal man, in whom there is no salvation.

As followers of Christ, we are saved by Grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to scripture alone, for the Glory of God alone. Not in Christ plus Trump and Biden. Not according to scripture plus Qanon and White Fragility. Not For the glory of you and God.

Again, I understand your disappointment, but as followers of Christ, you should know where your hope lies. And if this is you in this piece, I humbly ask and pray for to turn to God, pray to him and repent. Yes, challenging times are coming, some worse than we can imagine, but if you’re a follower of Christ, then we should be grateful because we know suffering is to come, but we also know the glory that is to come in heaven.
