Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker Review

How did we get here? I mean what happened to Star Wars? I remember how everyone was all pumped for The Force Awakens and loved it. Star Wars was on a roll for a while. Yes, some people hated Episode 7, but most people loved it, and then we had Rogue One, which is widely considered the best Star Wars movie since the original trilogy. Then we get to The Last Jedi, and then everything went down hill from there. J.J Abrams set up so much for the rest of the trilogy, but then Ryan Johnson took it in a completely different direction and it turned into a normal sci-fi movie, it felt nothing like Star Wars. With The Rise of Skywalker, Abrams attempted to fix what The Last Jedi screwed up, as well as filling in the things he wanted into this trilogy. Here are my thoughts on how exactly this went. There will be spoilers in here, so if you haven’t seen it, this is your chance to leave………………… no that’s the share button not the back…………………………. ok I assume you’re gone. Alright, on to the review.

So right from the get go, there is a problem, Emperor Palpatine is back from the dead. I get why J.J Abrams did it, but I still don’t like it. Him being back completely undermines the sacrifice Anakin Skywalker made in Episode 6. I think they should have resurrected Snoke in this movie, I think he was a brilliant villain for this trilogy. Other problems I had with the film is the fact that Rey is so OP. Yes, they do explain it with the fact that she is a Palpatine, but she is still OP. I like Rey, but they just handled her power poorly. The other problem is that this movie is very messy. I think the reason why is that JJ was trying his best to fix what The Last Jedi screwed up, and filling in the story, so because of this, it was just too messy and it moved very fast. Some other problems are that Finn’s character has been completely ruined, and that’s mostly due to Ryan Johnson. Poe is a doofus in this one, I’ve never cared for his character. Now, there were things I did like.

Back to the whole, Rey is a Palpatine thing, which it still baffles me that Palpatine had a kid, but I digress. They handled that story line well and the final battle is pretty epic. The coolest part is when the Jedi from the past start talking to help her to defeat the Emperor. The voices you hear are Anakin, Obi Wan (young and old), Yoda, Ahsoka, Kanan, Mace Windu, and Luke. Kylo Ren was handled very well in here. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is where Han Solo appears, I’m guessing he was in Kylo’s imagination, and helps his son return to the light, I just really enjoyed that, and it was cool to see Harrison Ford back. Leia, as always, was great in this film, and she does sadly die in the movie. So basically, all 3 original characters are dead.

Overall, this movie just didn’t hit it for, I didn’t hate, but it’s not something that I loved. It was better than Last Jedi by far, but I just thought it was Ok. In terms of ranking, it’s definitely towards the bottom. Bottom line, the Trilogy didn’t settle well for me, and the originals continue to be the best.
