This week, several updates and bombshells came to light, causing the Mueller Probe and everything related to heat up in various ways. It seems like it has been a long time since this issue was in the news. I almost forgot all about it, but here we are. So, just in case you forgot where this whole started, back in 2016, Democrats accused President Trump and his campaign of colluding with Russia to influence the 2016 Presidential Election. We are now 2 years into this investigation, there has been no solid evidence that Trump colluded with Russia, there’s been little I guess hints that it may have happened, but no solid evidence. With that being said, throughout these 2 years, there have been several bombshells, that don’t necessarily involve Trump, but involve his son Donald Trump Jr, Paul manafort, ex lawyer Michael Cohen, etc. This week’s bombshells however could potentially look bad for President Trump. I’m going to explain what I mean by this, but first here are updates and bombshells that happened this week.
Let’s start with Paul Manafort. So as we know, Paul Manafort was the campaign chairman for Donald Trump during the 2016 Presidential Election. Manafort was put under investigation and indicted by the Mueller team, for his ties with Russia and made tens of millions of dollars working with pro-Kremlin politicians in Ukraine, as well as tampering with witnesses. The big reason why Mueller indicted him was because he wanted Manafort has a key witnesses to use against Trump due to Manafort’s ties with Russia. Nothing Manafort has said or was indicted on so far has hurt Trump in any major way. This week however, Manafort once again landed himself in hot water. According to the Irish Times, Paul Manafort breached his plea deal with Mueller by lying to the investigators. As of right now, we don’t know what exactly he lied about but what we do know is that Mueller lost his big witness. Whether or not this damages the Mueller Probe in any serious way, we don’t know yet, but if you are a prosecutor in this situation, this is not good. Now in another bombshell report, Manafort allegedly held secret meetings with Julian Assange, head of the Russian front group Wiki leaks. According to The Guardian, Manafort met with Assange 3 times. Once in 2013, once in 2015, and once in 2016 in which he was part of the Trump campaign. Now, due to his meetings also being in 2013 and 2015, before he was working with Trump, it is not clear that Manafort was doing this with the purpose of actively colluding with Russia to influence the election. Actually, this report from the guardian has completely fallen apart. Assange has denied that this happened and there are discrepancies in the details of the meetings so it doesn’t look like that this story holds much water. That’s pretty much it regarding Manafort and once again, President Trump is not really affected by this.
Next we have Michael Cohen and this is where it could get dicey for President Trump….. maybe. According to ABC news, Cohen has plead guilty to charges for lying to the FBI. What he had lied about is the so called “Moscow deal”. What this was is that Donald Trump was setting up business arrangements with Russia to build a Trump tower in Moscow. This is carries about a 5 year sentence in prison for Cohen. So yeah, Trump apparently was making business deals with Russia to build a new Trump tower, not good, not good at all. Now, does this prove that Trump colluded with the Russians? No, it doesn’t, but this certainly doesn’t help his case. However, Cohen has said that this deal was solely real estate and nothing more, which seems likely. Again, none of this exactly hurts Trump in any major way, but here is where he could hurt himself.
As I have said before, pretty much all of the bombshells and updates coming from the Mueller Probe, hurt President Trump. Some in his team may be targeted, but Trump himself, not so much. So my main point by this is that he has nothing worry about, but of course the President has a tendency to open his mouth and causing trouble for himself. Yesterday, he sent a tweet storm regarding all of this and it is in typical Trumpian fashion. While I believe that he is innocent of this, tweeting out like this is not good. Now, you could say that this just proves he is innocent, but you can also look at it like he is worried about something, I tend to go with the former, but many could go with the ladder. Another thing that could hurt Trump is that if he pardons Paul Manafort. As I mentioned before, nothing that Manafort has been indicted with has hurt Trump, but there is still talks about a pardon. Now I highly doubt that this would happen, because Trump hasn’t said he would. However, if he were to pardon Manafort, it would be a huge mistake, because it would look like he is interfering with the investigation and could be grounds for impeachment. Again, he has nothing worry about right now. Because of this, he just needs to calm down and shut his mouth. If I were his lawyer, I would tell him this.
In the end, I don’t think this will end up damaging Trump in a big way. Like I said before, there has been no solid evidence supporting the idea of collusion and I highly doubt that Mueller’s final report will show anything. As much as I want this thing to be over, I think the best thing to do is to wait and see where the evidence takes us.
